由于Office 2007采用了新的文件格式，所以Office 2000、Office XP 或 Office 2003用户无法打开、编辑和保存新文件格式。所以，微软发布了Office Word、Excel 和 PowerPoint 2007 文件格式兼容包，安装该兼容包之后，就可以对Word、Excel 和 PowerPoint 2007 新增的文件格式进行打开、编辑和保存操作。该兼容包还可以与 Microsoft Office Word Viewer 2003、Excel Viewer 2003 和 PowerPoint Viewer 2003 配合使用，用来查看以这些新格式保存的文件。

微软建议使用Office XP 和 2003 系统 Word、Excel 或 PowerPoint 程序的用户，首先从Microsoft Update 安装所有高优先级的更新，然后下载兼容包。
