24日，微软宣布已经取消了原定于10月举行的PDC（专业开发者大会）。微软说要重新安排，具体日期仍未确定。MSDN网站上的说明如下：

（大意如此：由于PDC一直被权威开发人员所关注，他们想看到的是重要里程碑式的开发平台。但是，到今年秋季，即将到来的平台技术有Windows Server 2008、SQL Server（代码名为Katmai）、Visual Studio （代码名Orcas）和Silverlight，这些都将在下一阶段向开发人员展示，如果PDC的展开日期确定会另行通知。）

"As the PDC is the definitive developer event focused on the future of the Microsoft platform, we try to align it to be in front of major platform milestones. By this fall, however, upcoming platform technologies including Windows Server 2008, SQL Server codenamed 'Katmai,' Visual Studio codenamed 'Orcas' and Silverlight will already be in developers' hands and approaching launch, which is where we'll focus our developer engagement in the near term. We will update this site when we have a new date for the PDC that is better timed with the next wave of platform technologies."

过去的几年里，微软每两年举行一次PDC，主要为展示Windows和开发工具功能。

有趣的是，在取消通知中没有提及Windows客户端，PDC 2003和PDC 2005展示的都是Longhorn。

在PDC 2003上，微软向我们展示了Longhorn build 4051，并且开始出现早期的Aero，相当令人激动的一次盛会。PDC 2005上的Longhorn已经称为Vista，基本具备了Vista应该有的所有功能。

在前两届PDC上，Longhorn/Vista都是主角，甚至我们可以认为，PDC就是为Longhorn而召开的。可是现在，微软可以公开谈论的除了Windows Vista再无其他Windows客户端，或许这也是令PDC 2007严重缺乏内容而取消的原因之一。
