微软早在2006年7月14日向美国专利局提出申请：编号为20080013860，名为"Creation of three-dimensional user interface"（三维用户界面的建立）。该专利使用上图所示的茶壶作为模型，描述了使用二维贴图表述三维用户界面（UI）的概念，从而呈现为三维交互式场景。
Long Zheng认为它与Windows 7相关。如果Windows 7 采用全三维用户界面的话，到时候恐怕又要掀起反对高硬件要求的讨伐热论了。
